Loisos + Ubbelohde provided energy, daylighting, and glazing consulting for this 2.7 million square foot hospital and clinic in Abu Dhabi. L+U, using Energyplus, developed detailed energy models both of components of the project and a whole building model to analyze the energy efficiency of the project. The whole building model served as a benchmark for the team’s pursuit of a LEED gold certification. L+U worked closely with Ted Jacob Engineering Group, the mechanical engineers for the project, in developing the complex mechanical systems and accurately modeling them in the energy simulations.

Parametric energy simulations examined the impacts of every major building system and component from glazing to HVAC to lighting to operational schedules.

Extensive glazing consulting for the double envelope throughout the project resulted in an envelope performing 25% better than a base ASHRAE building, while maintaining a high visual transmittance. L+U coordinated multiple suppliers and fabricators to deliver highly custom glazing assembly samples to the client for their review and approval.

Daylighting simulations in Radiance provided both qualitative and quantitative analysis of daylighting within the project and aesthetics of the exterior. Photo-accurate renderings were produced and overlaid with illuminance contours. False color renderings, along with the photo-accurate renderings, gave an accurate way of determining the level of glare within a space.
