This year-round house is sited on a lot featuring mature vegetation and an existing pond. Designed as a private retreat, the house rings the pond with four buildings: the main house, study, pool house and garage. The interior is directly connected to the pond and terrace through large sliding glass doors. Radiant heating in the stone floors keep the occupants comfortable during rainy months, while during the summer the house is passively cooled through natural ventilation, thermal mass and shading. Green building materials were used, including high fly-ash concrete, formaldehyde-free casework and denim insulation. Photovoltaic and hot water solar panels are concealed on the roofs. Loisos + Ubbelohde provided assistance with thermal strategies for heating and passive cooling, shading and alternative energy.
