ResMed Corporate Headquarters is a 6 story, $90 million international office building with 230,000 sf in San Diego, California. The data center features a state-of-the-art under floor air distribution center and the façade includes the use of a rainscreen ventilated wall system to allow the building to breathe. The design includes significant use of daylighting with visual comfort and thermal performance, increased through the use of light shelves and overhangs.

Loisos + Ubbelohde developed a sophisticated energy-saving strategy that coupled building performance with electric lighting, daylighting, and a high-performance envelope design. The project used a task-ambient approach for lighting large open office spaces within the building, coupling uplighting on the ceiling for general illumination with low-wattage LED task lights on the desks for more personal user control. Solar orientation and daylight penetration were analyzed throughout the building to determine detailed lighting controls that greatly reduce the building’s energy demand and an automated protocol for mechanized shades that mitigate solar heat gain.  We also designed a custom light fixture for the corporation’s executive conference room and a large LED programmed light sculpture that forms the entry backdrop.
